AAUW Sarasota

Local Educational Opportunities

The Sarasota branch of AAUW offers a variety of education related opportunities. These include purchasing books for third-graders in our Write-Read-Write program; supporting a STEM camp for 7th grade girls; sending local college seniors to an AAUW leadership conference (NCCWSL) in Washington DC; awarding scholarships for women returning to college; and providing a scholarship for women pursuing training for a non-traditional career. Together, AAUW and its members aim to shape the future of equity and inspire the next generation of female leaders. AAUW empowers women through its vibrant and inclusive community.

AAUW Sarasota Education Starts With 3rd Graders

Education: Kids Who Read Succeed

Local 3rd graders can benefit from AAUW Sarasota’s Write-Read-Write program.  The students write a note about what book they would like to own and read.  Our members purchase the books requested and send them to the individual students with a note.  When the student has read the book they write us back and let us know how they felt about reading the book.

For many students it is the first time they get to keep their very own books.

◊ Another of Our Educational Endeavors ◊

Tech Trek is a weeklong STEM camp at either Stetson or Florida Atlanta University and is offered to seventh grade girls to encourage their interest in STEM.

The girls are recommended by their math or science teachers in their middle school.  The cost of the camp, except for $50, is covered by the AAUW.

National Conference for College Women Student Leaders

College students can apply for the opportunity to attend the National Conference for College Student Leaders.  It takes place in Washington, DC each spring and is a weekend filled with messages from women leaders.

Annual Scholarships

AAUW Sarasota provides programs that support and meet the needs of girls and women at every age including giving annual scholarships for postsecondary education and opportunities for women to pursue non- traditional jobs.

In 2023, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the occupational distributions of female and male full-time workers differ considerably. Relatively few women work in natural resources, construction, and maintenance occupations compared with men (575,000 or 1 percent versus 10.8 million or 16 percent, respectively). In addition, compared with men, women are far more concentrated in office and administrative support occupations (16 percent and 6 percent, respectively)
